A Lantern Case Study

This lantern illustration began as an exploration of light, warmth, and cultural storytelling. Created in Adobe Illustrator, it was designed not just as a visual, but as a flexible symbol that could carry meaning across contexts. The goal was to capture the essence of a lantern, a symbol of guidance and celebration, while thinking strategically about how it could function across different applications and audiences.

From this base illustration, I explored how a single artwork could evolve through colour, composition, and medium. I considered both creative impact and practical use, transforming the lantern into prints, greeting cards, and motion-based designs. This approach demonstrates how a concept can communicate consistently across formats while supporting broader storytelling and brand goals.

Art Prints

To explore tone and audience, I created four art prints in two categories:

Minimal: A neutral, refined version designed for a calm, contemporary aesthetic

Vibrant: A colourful, expressive version that leans into texture and visual richness

These variations show how subtle changes in palette and atmosphere can completely shift the mood of a single design and allow the illustration to resonate with different audiences.

Greeting Cards

I adapted the illustration into a greeting card format to experiment with composition and storytelling. In this version, the lantern becomes a symbol of connection and celebration, designed to evoke warmth and sentiment through a simple, thoughtful layout.

The goal was to create both minimal and vibrant variations that could engage a wide audience using a single illustration.

Digital Motion

To extend the project further, I created a mobile-sized animation as a digital invitation or greeting card. The animation features subtle, rhythmic swaying of the lanterns, adding a gentle sense of movement and calm without relying on glow or effects.

This motion piece highlights how illustration can translate into digital formats while maintaining emotional impact and storytelling clarity.

This project became a study in versatility, exploring how one illustration can shift in tone, function, and feeling across different formats. The lantern evolved from a simple vector drawing into a multi-purpose design system, showing how strategic thinking and creative execution together can transform a single idea into a rich, adaptable visual story.
